The Responsible Mica Initiative developed its first Responsible Workplace Standard for Mica Processors back in 2018, one year after its creation, with support of its expert members and through an on-site pilot at 3 processing sites in India. Focusing on ESG performances, this standard was lacking a Due Diligence focus.
In 2020, the Responsible Mica Initiative along with the Responsible Minerals Initiative came therefore together to co-develop the Global Workplace and Due Diligence Standard for Mica Processors, building on our existing ESG standard and on Due Diligence expertise of the Responsible Minerals Initiative. Launched in March 2021, it provides a unified framework to promote responsible, safe, and sustainable mica processing worldwide, and is revised regularly.
This Standard defines clear requirements for mica processors to improve workplace conditions, ensure environmental and social compliance, and strengthen supply chain transparency through due diligence aligned with OECD guidelines.
Covering key areas such as environmental management, occupational health and safety, human rights, governance, and upstream due diligence, it supports continuous improvement and responsible sourcing practices across the mica value chain.
By adopting this Standard, mica processors demonstrate leadership in building a responsible mica supply chain, contributing to fair labor conditions, safe workplaces, and respect for human rights.
Without strong governance and traceability mechanisms, illegally mined mica can easily enter global supply chains, making responsible sourcing both urgent and complex.
